Graeme Souness delivers 'not sustainable' verdict over Newcastle United league position

Former Newcastle United manager Graeme Souness has said that he believes the Magpies' position in the Premier League table is not sustainable for the rest of the season. Eddie Howe's side currently find themselves in fourth after 13 games, have only lost once all season and have the best defence in the league having only conceded 10 goals this campaign.

They currently sit ahead of the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool while only two points behind Tottenham Hotspur who sit in third.

Speaking on Sky Sports before their game against Southampton, Souness was hesitant over whether Newcastle can continue their run in the top four throughout the season.

When asked if they can sustain their position ahead of Manchester United and Chelsea, he said: "I'm not so sure, I'm with Jamie [Redknapp] on that one. But you never know. If injuries are kind to them, I think the manager is really getting a tune out the players that others couldn't.

"That's not just to his credit, but also the players that have come in, that they've bought in, have added a lot of quality and they've bought into it very quickly. If it's going well up there, it's a fabulous place to be playing your football."
