Graeme Souness delivers brutal Harry Kane rant following Tottenham star's 'passion' comments

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has criticised Harry Kane for comments the Tottenham Hotspur striker made about his side's passion and desire.

Spurs endured an afternoon to forget last Sunday, losing 6-1 against Newcastle United in a match that saw them concede five inside the opening 21 minutes at St James' Park. The north Londoners then found themselves 2-0 down at home to Manchester United on Thursday evening before fighting back to draw 2-2 thanks to second-half strikes from Pedro Porro and Son Heung-min.

Spurs frontman Kane then spoke highly of the Lilywhites' mentality, telling Sky Sports: "After the Newcastle game, going two nil down at half-time, it could have been easy to fold. In that second half of the (Manchester) United game we’ve done the opposite, we’ve come out fighting and we’ve come out with desire, passion and that hunger to turn things around."

Now, Souness has taken exception to the England captain's interview, labelling his comments as 'media trained' in a passionate rant. Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Liverpool midfielder said: "I’ll be as polite as I possibly can. When you’re a professional football player, passion should be with you all the time.

"Desire should be with you all the time. It’s not a light switch, you can’t flick it on and off. Harry came across there as if he’s been media trained, he knew what questions were coming and he knew how he was going to answer them. I know I’m a certain age and I know I’m from a different generation, but I find that so weak.

"I played with players that the most important thing in their lives come Friday was what’s going to happen on the Saturday, and they went out there as if that was it - everything I do, everything I contribute, is on the next 90 minutes. These players that come on and be interviewed, they’re media trained.

"Supporters don’t want to hear that - passion and desire for 45 minutes against Man United, what about going back to the first game of the season in August? That’s when the passion and desire starts, and that’s when it’s with you throughout the season. Then at the end of the day, if you’re a good player and you’re a good team, you might win something.

"When you don’t consistently let down the supporters like this Spurs group of players have done. They’ve let down managers, they’ve let down the supporters and ultimately they’ve let down themselves and their own families.

"I feel embarrassed for him making that comment, and I’m a big fan of Harry Kane, but I think they’re all media trained up to the hilt now and for me I find it very frustrating."
