Graeme Souness and Karen Carney disagree over West Ham’s disallowed goal vs Nottingham Forest

Sky Sports pundits Graeme Souness and Karen Carney have disagreed over West Ham United’s disallowed goal in their 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

The Hammers suffered their second straight defeat in as many matches on Sunday after Taiwo Awoniyi’s first half strike was enough to separate the two sides in a frantic affair that would have left David Moyes’ side baffled as to how they failed to score in the East Midlands.

Shortly before the winning goal, Said Benrahma had briefly put the Irons ahead, only for his goal to be ruled out by VAR after a foul from Michail Antonio on Orel Mangala in the build-up.

Speaking on Sky Sports at half-time, Souness, who played for and managed Liverpool during his professional career, felt that it was a foul as Mangala would have been able to tackle Rice if Antonio had not barged into him in the build up.

“I think he’s the nearest one to Declan Rice,” Souness said on Mangala. “I think he shuffles left and he’s on his way to him (Mangala to Rice). Antonio’s arms are up.

“He’s seen the collision is happening. Could he have avoided him? Maybe. I think the ref has gone on the fact, he was the nearest player to the ball and therefore he’s got to give a foul.”

However, former England and Chelsea Women’s star Carney disagreed with colleague Souness on the foul.

She believed that it was an incident Antonio could not have done a lot about it and that the goal should have been given.

“I think he’s seen Antonio come full pelt and he’s taken that,” added Carney. “That happens a lot in corners and a fouls’ been given. I think the goal should have been given.”
