Graeme Murty in life after Rangers chance as Sunderland make their move for former Ibrox caretaker

Former Rangers boss Graeme Murty is set for a return to football with Sunderland.

Murty was in charge of the Gers’ second string being called on to step into the dugout following the departure of Mark Warburton in February 2017 before reverting to his development squad role after the appointment of Pedro Caixinha. Eight months later, he was back in charge after the Portuguese was sacked by Rangers the following October. Murty was given the job until the end of the 2017/18 season that December.

However, heavy defeats to rivals Celtic towards the end of the season saw Murty taken out of the firing line ahead of Steven Gerrard ’s arrival that summer, resuming his role with the club’s Under 20s squad. He left the club in November 202, but now he’s set to take charge of Sunderland’ s Under 21 side. Previous Black Cats boss Alex Neil promoted Mike Dodds and Michael Proctor to the first team coaching staff before he left the Stadium of Light to take over at Stoke.

Successor Tony Mowbray now looks to be on the verge of appointing Murty to the role. Coach John Hewitson has been taking the 21s on an interim basis until now.
