Whistleblower protections are being considered by the federal government as it prepares to introduce laws for a national anti-corruption commission.
Independent MP Helen Haines is pushing for a whistleblower protection commissioner to support people who report corruption in the public sector.
"This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to implement an integrity commission that holds politicians to account and creates a better level of transparency and governance at the federal level," Dr Haines told parliament on Wednesday.
"I don't consider the introduction of the legislation to be job done. I'll be working hard to make sure we get it right."
The government will introduce its proposal for an anti-corruption commission to parliament next week, Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said.
He flagged possible changes to public interest disclosure laws in the coming months.
"Frameworks to protect whistleblowers are critical to supporting integrity and the rule of law," Mr Dreyfus told parliament.
"Whether or not it goes to a whistleblower protection commissioner is something that the government is still considering."
