New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) issued five executive orders from April 24-30. As of April 30, Lujan Grisham has issued 55 executive orders in 2023 — 32 more than she did at this point a year ago. Three of the orders are:
- Executive Order 2023-053, where the governor authorized additional emergency funds for the ongoing emergency in the City of Las Vegas due to the ash and fire debris resulting from the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon fires.
- Executive Order 2023-052, where the governor ordered the flags to be flown at half-staff in memorial of Governor Jerry Apodaca.
- Executive Order 2023-051, where the governor ordered the flags to be flown at half-staff in memorial of Representative Kandy Cordova.
Governors use executive orders to manage executive branch operations. During the week of April 24-30, the nation’s governors issued 14 executive orders. Lujan Grisham issued the most with five. Governors in 41 states issued the fewest orders with zero. Democratic governors issued nine of the 14 orders, while Republican governors issued five.
Lujan Grisham has served as governor since Jan. 1, 2019. She issued 164 executive orders in 2022 and 68 in 2021. Nationally, governors issued at least 1,558 executive orders in 2022. Governors have issued 539 executive orders in 2023. Republican governors issued 352, while Democratic governors issued 187. New Mexico is a Democratic trifecta, meaning Democrats control the governorship and both chambers of the state legislature.
