Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) issued two executive orders from Jan. 23-30. As of Jan. 30, Polis has issued four executive orders in 2023—one fewer than he did at this point a year ago.
Governors use executive orders to manage executive branch operations. During the week of Jan. 23-30, the nation’s governors issued 20 executive orders. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) issued the most with six. Governors in 41 states no executive orders. Republican governors issued 14 of the 20 executive orders, while Democratic governors issued six.
Polis has served as governor since Jan. 8, 2019. He issued 70 executive orders in 2022 and 162 in 2021. Nationally, governors issued 1,544 executive orders in 2022. This count excludes Arkansas, Hawaii, and Nevada, as Ballotpedia could not identify counts as of this writing. Governors have issued 184 executive orders in 2023. Republican governors issued 127, while Democratic governors issued 57. Colorado is a Democratic trifecta, meaning Democrats control the governorship and both chambers of the state legislature.
