Govanhill resident 'humiliated' at 'disgusting' fly-tipping as rats roam the streets

A Govanhill resident has been left outraged by the fly-tipping in the area and claims people are 'sharing their homes with rats'.

Pictures posted online show a lane off South Annandale Street awash with rubbish, including old mattresses and rugs.

One person living nearby says they has been left 'humiliated' and 'depressed' by the state of the street near their home and feels ignored by the local authorities.

The resident told Glasgow Live: "It has been in that state for about nine months. It's been an ongoing thing for years that nobody takes steps to fix.

"The council have done nothing about it - a van came out once, but they put yellow tape round it and buggered off and that's it. It's disgusting. There's rats everywhere.

"There's a disabled woman living next to it who is basically sharing her house with rats now. Multiple residents have contacted the council, politicians etc in the past and nothing has been done.

"It is depressing and humiliating to live in and around those conditions. I don't know what can be done to fix it but we can't take anymore."

Many residents have reached out to their local representatives in the council and government, however, the issue still hasn't been solved.

Residents have complained to their councillors and MSPs (supplied)

Labour Councillor for Southside Central, Dr Soryia Siddique, told Glasgow Live: "I have received many complaints regarding fly-tipping in Govanhill. I have raised this with cleansing and public health.

"Govanhill is a pressurised area, budget cuts and charging for bulk item uplifts has worsened the environmental issues in the area. I am campaigning for the following: Local community co-created action plan for Govanhill; Stakeholders to agree on a refreshed unified approach with clear monitored targets; Green enhancement teams, including for back courts and making education and enforcement a priority.

"Govanhill deserves much better."

Glasgow Conservative MSP, Dr. Sandesh Gulhane, added: "Images of this level of fly-tipping are absolutely shocking.

"They are a blight on our communities like Govanhill and make people's lives a misery. Fly-tipping is far too common across Glasgow, yet we have a SNP Council sitting on their hands and failing to tackle it.

"My colleague Murdo Fraser has brought forward a bill to dish out tougher punishments to those who fly-tip and it is scenes like this that sum up why tougher laws are urgently needed."

The council say the lane is privately owned (supplied)

The council has confirmed the lane is privately owned, therefore, it is not part of their cleaning schedule.

However, they are currently discussing ways in which they can support the local community to ensure the lane remains clean.

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “We understand the concerns expressed by the local resident, but this lane is privately owned and not included in the council’s maintenance schedule.

“Responsibility for maintaining the lane ultimately rests with the owners of the flats immediately adjacent to the lane.

“But we are looking at how we can support the local community to clear-up the lane.

“Owners, residents or factors can also access advice and support through our private lane toolkit and the private lane fund, which is open to formally constituted groups.

“Where private ground is left in an unsanitary condition our public health can serve enforcement notices on owners that make them liable for a clear-up. “
