Govan fire erupts as crews tackle blaze with plumes of smoke seen across city

A large fire has erupted in the Govan area of Glasgow this evening.

Emergency services have rushed to the scene to tackle the blaze. Images show huge plumes of black smoke billowing from the fire which is reported to have begun at John R Adam metal scrapyard on Renfrew Road.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue service confirmed to Glasgow Live that they were in attendance at the scene, with three appliances currently present. A spokeswoman also confirmed that the fire occurred in a large pile of rubbish.

She said: "We were called to the scene on Renfrew Road in Glasgow at 5.23pm. Three appliances are currently in attendance.

"A large pile of rubbish measuring 20 metres by 50 metres caught fire. There is heavy smoke in the area."

It is not currently known how the fire began.

Glasgow Live contacted Police Scotland for comment who said they were not called to this particular incident.
