'Got nothing to lose' - Former Liverpool star sends message to Reds ahead of Blackburn clash

Former Liverpool defender Evie Smith is hoping to help Blackburn Rovers to a famous victory when they take on Liverpool in the Continental Cup this weekend.

The Reds currently sit top of their group, having picked up wins against Sunderland and Leicester City, while Blackburn haven't picked up a point in their cup campaign so far. Gemma Donnelly's side play in the Women's Championship - one division below Liverpool - and were handed a bruising 6-0 defeat when the two teams last met in January this year.

However, Smith is confident her side can go toe-to-toe with their hosts when they travel to Prenton Park on Sunday, following a five-game unbeaten run in the league. Smith, who signed for Blackburn in the summer after eight years on Merseyside, has revealed her allegiances are firmly with her new club.

She told club media : “It’s exciting and we’re on a good run in the league which we can take into Sunday. It’s a good opportunity for us against good opposition to challenge ourselves - I can’t wait.

“With the form that we’re in we need to go into it with confidence. We’ve got nothing to lose so we can just go for it and hopefully get a result out of it.”

Smith is set to make a return to Blackburn's starting XI on Sunday and is keen to show what she can do on the big stage.

“You train week in and week out every week and when you get your opportunity you’ve got to take it with both hands and that’s what I’ll do,” she said. "Hopefully I can make it count.”

Smith was part of the squad that helped Liverpool return to the top-flight of the women's game last term and the defender has revealed she is looking forward to returning to her former stomping ground.

She said: “It might be a bit strange, and it will be nice to see some old faces, but my full focus is Blackburn. This is my team now and I love it here and at the end of the day Liverpool are just another team on the weekend.”

Liverpool have endured a turbulent season so far and currently sit tenth in the WSL table. However, the Reds are yet to concede in the Conti Cup and Matt Beard will hope his side can build on back-to-back league draws against Brighton and Reading ahead of their final group game against Manchester City in December.
