'Got a little emotional' – Jamie Carragher apologises to Chelsea fans

Jamie Carragher has apologised for claims he made about Chelsea’s Academy during Monday Night Football.

Carragher accused some Chelsea supporters of being 'hypocritical' after he received a backlash for suggesting Manchester United should make an approach for Thomas Tuchel. After 20 years of success under the ownership of Roman Abramovich, the future of the Stamford Bridge club was last week thrown into disarray.

The Russian oligarch was hit by UK Government sanctions - as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine - leading to the imminent sale of the club. And Carragher, speaking ahead of Crystal Palace’s draw with Man City, claimed Chelsea have taken advantage of situations for years and thrown money at any situation so that they benefit.

One of the areas he mentioned was the club’s Academy system, claiming that they continue to enjoy FA Youth Cup success because they take the best players from every club in the country.

He said: "They win the Youth Cup every year or get into the final, not because they have the best coaches or the best academy, but because they go and basically take the best players from every club within this country and relocate the family."

However, Chelsea HQ hit back at the claims on Twitter, saying: “Don’t disagree with your points about Kenyon, Gerrard, Cole, but, respectfully, the Academy part was wrong. See thread below.”

And Carragher responded to the tweet by apologising and saying he 'got a little emotional'.

Speaking on Chelsea during the show, the former Liverpool defender said: "Chelsea football club have taken advantage of every other club in the last 20 years because of Roman Abramovich.

"So if I give an opinion of another club taking advantage of them, that’s just a way of life.

"I don’t want Chelsea to go to the wall. But that’s my opinion of it, I don’t want Chelsea fans the next time I go there questioning that opinion because that is exactly what Chelsea have done for the last 20 years."
