Gordon Banks, who died on Monday night aged 81, enjoyed a remarkable career, establishing himself as an icon wherever he took his gloves.
The 1966 World Cup winner with England was also hailed in Leicester and Stoke, where he claimed a League Cup with both clubs.
Banks vs Pele will forever be the ultimate battle at the highest level of the sport.
The legendary Brazilian denied in a famous moment by Banks’ acrobatics, which left Pele stunned.
There are many moments that spring to mind though over his career, both during his playing days and since, where his infectious smile and warm personality was adored by fans wherever he went.
Peter Shilton’s emotional tribute showed the importance Banks had on those that followed him.
“I’m devastated – today I’ve lost my hero our condolences to his family RIP,” wrote Shilton.
A legacy that will live on for decades, as Raheem Sterling acknowledged in his own tribute.
He wrote: “Of course there was THAT save, but its so much more we are mourning today. RIP Gordon Banks. England legend, your legacy will live on. All my thoughts with the family.”
