GoPro CEO Nick Woodman on luck, AI and beating the competition

In 2002 27-year-old Nick Woodman began selling his home-made wrist cameras out of surf shops; his third business attempt, but one that would grow to become a household name in the world of action cameras: GoPro.

The brand has become synonymous with capturing footage of extreme sports, climbing, deep sea diving and for many it is the go-to company for a camera that can cope almost anywhere.

Back in 2012 when Felix Baumgartner ascended more than 24 miles above the earth before literally jumping back from the edge of space, the cameras he used to film the stunt were of course GoPros.

However, those first-edition wrist cameras were never initially intended to become a multi-million dollar business, and on this week’s episode CEO and founder Nick Woodman reveals the lessons he’s learned in those 21 years since he launched the company.

From the fear of hiring new people, to dealing with constantly evolving competitors, Nick explains how the brand has stayed on top for all these years, and how his passion for the business has helped him succeed.

Nick also describes his plans for the future of GoPro, including a focus on video editing software, how he plans to utilise artificial intelligence to benefit customers, and the new types of cameras for more specialist users.
