GOP Senators Express Disagreement With US Decision On Russia

Senator Thom Tillis, co-chair of the Senate NATO Observer Group speaks, during a press conference, in Budapest, Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024. Two U.S. senators will submit a bipartisan resolution to Congress

Republican Senator Thom Tillis expressed his disagreement with the recent US decision to align with Russia in voting against a UN General Assembly resolution condemning Russia's war against Ukraine. Senator Tillis stated that Russia was clearly the aggressor and that he would have voted in favor of the resolution if given the opportunity.

The US also voted similarly to Russia on a US-proposed UN Security Council resolution that did not label the Kremlin as the aggressor or recognize Ukraine's territorial integrity. When asked about his thoughts on the US aligning with Russia instead of European allies, Senator Tillis mentioned that the Trump administration must make its own decisions and speculated that the vote could have been part of a broader negotiation strategy regarding the ongoing conflict.
