GOP Lawmaker Intentionally Misgenders Trans Colleague Sarah McBride as 'Mr. McBride': 'Have you NO DECENCY?'

A congressional hearing was abruptly adjourned after a Texas representative repeatedly misgendered the first openly transgender member of Congress, Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE).

Rep. Keith Self (R-TX) repeatedly referred to McBride as "Mr. McBride," prompting a heated exchange with Rep. Bill Keating (D-MA) that led to the hearing's sudden end.

When Self first introduced "Mr. McBride," the congresswoman calmy retorted, "Thank you, Madam Chair," as she proceeded. She was interrupted by Keating, who asked Self to repeat his introduction. Self again introduced "the representative from Delaware, Mr. McBride."

"Mr. Chairman, you are out of order," Keating responded. "Have you no decency?! I've come to know you but this is not decent."

When Self unapologetically declared the hearing would continue, Keating raised his voice in objection. "You will not continue it with me unless you introduce a duly-elected representative the RIGHT WAY." Rather than argue, Self adjourned the session.

McBride has previously contended with attacks from fellow House members, including deliberate misgendering and efforts to ban McBride from using the women's restroom at the Capital. The so-called "bathroom ban" was excluded from the House Rules, however, the Trump administration has already acted on campaign promises to "stop transgender lunacy." In a series of executive orders, the administration has defined biological sex as male or female, barred transgender athletes from competing in women's sports, restricted gender-affirming care for youth, and rolled back protections for transgender members of the military.
