Democratic Rep. Yadira Caraveo has conceded the race in her reelection bid for Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, with GOP state Rep. Gabe Evans flipping the seat for Republicans.
In a post on Sunday, Caraveo expressed gratitude to her family, volunteers, staff, and supporters for their belief in her campaign. Despite the outcome not aligning with their hopes, she emphasized that the work is far from over.
Gabe Evans, an Army veteran and former police officer, strategically leveraged his background to portray Caraveo as a 'soft-on-crime' liberal during the campaign. Caraveo, a first-term representative, positioned herself as a moderate willing to challenge her own party on immigration issues, such as voting on a resolution that strongly criticized the Biden administration's approach to the US southern border.
The 8th Congressional District, encompassing Denver's suburbs, emerged as one of the most fiercely contested races in the nation.
As of now, there are 16 House contests that remain undecided, leaving the control of the lower chamber of Congress uncertain.
Republicans are now just four seats away from securing the majority, while Democrats are 13 seats shy of gaining control of the chamber.
