A GOP congressman has proposed amending the US Constitution to allow President Donald Trump to run for a third term. The suggested amendment, put forth by Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee, aims to modify the existing term limits for the President.
The proposed amendment states, ‘‘No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.’’ Ogles believes that this change would allow President Trump to provide the leadership he deems necessary for the nation.
However, amending the US Constitution is a challenging process. It requires a two-thirds vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, or a constitutional convention, which has not been convened since the 18th century. Furthermore, for an amendment to be ratified, three-fourths of state legislatures (38 states) must approve it.
While the proposal by Rep. Ogles highlights the support for President Trump within the Republican base, it has faced criticism from Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida. She expressed concerns about the lack of consideration for the American people's voice in decision-making through regular elections.
Given the current political landscape and the stringent requirements for amending the Constitution, the likelihood of this proposal coming to fruition remains uncertain. It underscores the ongoing political dynamics surrounding President Trump and the differing perspectives within the US Congress.
