Google is set to comply with President Donald Trump's recent executive action that has renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. This change will soon be reflected on Google Maps, as per a post on X, where Google explained its practice of updating names based on official government sources.
The name change will be implemented once the Geographic Names Information System, a government database containing names and location data, is updated to reflect the new name. Additionally, Google will also adjust the name of Mount McKinley, the highest peak in the United States, back to its original name from Denali.
Former President Barack Obama had renamed the Alaskan landmark to Denali in 2015 as a tribute to the native population of the region. These changes are a result of an executive action signed by President Trump shortly after assuming office, with the intention of honoring what he referred to as 'American greatness'.
