Google is teaming up with GM to bring AI to cars

Since ChatGPT launched in November, businesses across industries have been hunting for ways to apply similar conversational AI tech to their sector. Even carmakers are looking for ways to use and apply the tech that makes a Large Language Model (LLM) like ChatGPT possible.

To that end, General Motors (GM) -) last year launched its OnStar Interactive Virtual Assistant (IVA), which is powered by Google (GOOGL) -) Cloud's generative AI technology.

The resulting experiment provided OnStar users AI-generated responses to common questions, as well as navigation and routing assistance. This virtual assistant now handles more than 1 million customer inquiries every month, according to GM. The assistant has additionally been trained to recognize certain words and phrases that might indicate an emergency; upon hearing them, IVA will route the call to OnStar's emergency team.

On the heels of that "successful" effort, GM said Tuesday that it will be expanding its partnership with Google to continue exploring new ways to apply similar technology across GM.

“Generative AI has the potential to revolutionize the buying, ownership, and interaction experience inside the vehicle and beyond, enabling more opportunities to deliver new features and services,”  Mike Abbott, GM's executive vice president, software and services, said in a statement. “Our software-led approach has accelerated the creation of compelling services for our customers while driving increased efficiency across the GM enterprise."

With the OnStar IVA under its belt, GM has begun deploying AI chatbots designed to answer customer questions about GM vehicles and products across its corporate and brand websites.

GM first began its collaboration with Google Cloud in 2019 when it started building Google into its vehicles.

More Artificial Intelligence:

“General Motors is at the forefront of deploying AI in practical and effective ways that ultimately create better customer experiences,” Thomas Kurian, Google Cloud's CEO, said.

GM is not alone in this effort to apply ChatGPT-adjacent tech to its cars. Mercedes-Benz said in June that it is partnering with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its cars in a Beta program that more than 900,000 vehicles are eligible to join.

GM's stock rose slightly Tuesday; Alphabet's stock was up more than 3% Tuesday morning.
