Google Doodle interactive game celebrates popcorn — how to play

Google is popping on Thursday (September 26).

Google’s latest Doodle recognises popcorn’s global popularity. Besides the artwork on its homepage, web visitors can engage in a player-versus-environment game with a popcorn theme.

“You butter believe that today’s interactive Doodle is celebrating your go-to movie companion and classic late-night snack: popcorn,” Google said. “This game is making Doodles history by allowing the highest number of players to compete in a match at the same time ever.”

As the Doodle game is accessible in multiple countries, Google is bringing users from worldwide together to compete against one another, as seen on the company's map.

What is Google Doodle’s game?

Google has released its unique ‘Doodle’ homepages for several purposes since 1998.

The group created its first Doodle, representing the Burning Man community and arts festival, as an out-of-office note for company founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page. They attended the event in the desert.

Doodles have since gained recognition for honouring various subjects, including teachers, black cartoonists, and young artists.

The latest Doodle marked four years since the largest popcorn machine set a world record in Thailand.

Carnival Magic Theme Park in Phuket made the machine measuring over 25 feet tall, 11 feet wide and nine feet deep, according to Guinness World Records. The theme park was awarded the title on September 26, 2020 — the game will be live for 48 hours until September. 26 at 11.59pm.

How to play Google Doodle’s popcorn game

Gamers have two options: they can play by themselves or use a link to invite friends to play in "squad mode."

To survive each round, players begin as unpopped corn kernels attempting to dodge enemy-fired pellets, which include a wicked stick of butter. After selecting one of three character possibilities, players can play concurrently, advancing from one phase to the next with the arrow keys and space bar.
