Goodwin Village Farrer residents have raised almost $15,000 for the Dementia Australia Research Foundation.
The money was raised at a market day on-site in March when the residents sold everything from plants and craft to furniture and jewellery they no longer required after downsizing and moving into the Farrer complex.
The residents, led by market day convenor June Hicks, earlier this month handed over a cheque for $14,500 to Dementia Australia
The organisation was very appreciative, with Dementia Australia community fundraising spokesperson Sheridan Jones saying there are about half a million Australians currently living with dementia and without a medical breakthrough, the number of people with dementia is expected to increase to almost 1.1 million by 2058.
"Your incredible fundraising from the Goodwin Village Market Day will help us continue the vital research we support into dementia and the hope that one day there will be a cure," Ms Jones told the residents.
"As an organisation, we simply couldn't have the impact without support like yours and for this we are extremely grateful."
As well as a huge decluttering and fundraising exercise, the market day has also brought the residents together after so much isolation during COVID.
