Goodfella's Ray Liotta's cause of death revealed after he died while filming

Ray Liotta 's cause of death has been revealed, a year after the Goodfellas star passed away suddenly.

Reports say the Hollywood actor died of heart and respiratory issues. He was found dead in the Dominican Republic at the age of 67.

He had been on the island nation filming Dangerous Waters when he passed away in his sleep.

According to TMZ, Ray had pulmonary edema, which is an abnormal buildup of fluid in the lungs. He also reportedly had respiratory insufficiency and acute heart failure.

Medical notes also claimed he had atherosclerosis as an underlying issue. This is when there is a thickening of the arteries caused by plaque building up in the inner lining.

The news of his death stunned the world as his fiancee paid tribute to her beloved partner. She wrote on Instagram a few days after his death: "My life these past couple of years have been nothing but truly magical.

"Ray and I share a deep love that I will cherish in my heart forever. We laughed daily and we were inseparable. The chemistry was wild in the best way. He was everything in the world to me and we couldn’t get enough of each other. The kind of real love that one dreams of."

Other kind words also quickly poured in from some of the biggest names in the industry, including Jennifer Lopez who labelled him her "partner in crime".

The actress shared a number of snaps of the pair together and wrote: "Ray was my partner in crime on Shades of Blue … the first thing that comes to mind is he was so kind to my children.

"Ray was the epitome of a tough guy who was all mushy on the inside … I guess that’s what made him such a compelling actor to watch. The original Goodfella."

Rocketman actor Taron Egerton also recalled the "profound experience" of playing Ray's son in the Apple TV series Black Bird.

He said at the time: "I have never felt such an easy, warm connection with another performer. He was so generous. If I went one way he followed me. Always dancing. Always listening. Never self-generated."

On Twitter following the news, Super Bad star Seth Rogen tweeted: "Can’t believe Ray Liotta has passed away. He was such a lovely, talented and hilarious person."

Ray is survived by his daughter Karsen, 24.
