Good Morning Britain viewers were left distracted by an item in Edwina Currie's home on Monday as the former Conservative MP joined the ITV news programmes via a live link from the Peak District. The 75-year-old former politician appeared alongside former MP Anna Soubry as they were quizzed on whether Boris Johnson was already "winding down" from his role as Prime Minister.
The pair were interviewed by GMB hosts Ed Balls and Charlotte Hawkins following reports that the PM, who resigned earlier this month, had been accused by Labour MP Lisa Nandy of having "clocked off" after he was absent from a COBRA meeting on the UK heatwave, the Liverpool Echo reports.
Presenter Charlotte Hawkins asked if the PM had "checked out" and was "winding down" to which Ms Currie, who was a was a Tory MP from 1983 to 1998, replied: "There's an idea that somehow if the Prime Minster's not actually sitting in his seat in the cabinet office nothing is happening - and that is complete rubbish.
"There is all sorts of other people in Whitehall and in the ministries who are busy doing the jobs. You're never not covered. August is a time when Parliament isn't sitting. No legislation is having to be taken through Parliament." But Charlotte was keen to continue the line of questioning and insisted that the country "still needs to be run" as there are a "lot of big issues going on at the moment".
Despite the serious TV debate, many viewers were left completely distracted by one item in particular spotted in Edwina's home - a carboard cut-out of Boris Johnson. She addressed the life-size decoration at the start of the interview, explaining how she had attended a fundraising party for the Conservatives on Sunday.
But viewers were still left baffled and were quick to take to Twitter. Tyler said: "She has a cut-out of Boris Johnson in her house and supposed to take her serious?". Ben O'Hare added: "Edwina Currie appears to have a 6ft cardboard cut out of Boris Johnson in her front room. #GMB."
Hannah said: "Why the b***** h*** does Edwina Currie have a life size cut-out of BoJo in her living room…? #goodmorningbritain." Ella commented: "Refuse to take anyone seriously with giant cardboard cutout of Boris Johnson in their living room." whilst Kenneth added: "#GMB Edwina Currie must very lonely with a cut out board of Boris Johnson in the background…"
Teena posted : "Nothing weird at all, Edwina Currie having a cardboard cutout of Boris Johnson." Jones tweeted, alongside a sickened emoji: "A grown woman with a cardboard cutout of Boris Johnson in her front room."
