Good Morning Britain viewers were baffled on Tuesday morning after tuning in to see the show was debating the correct way to peel bananas. The ITV morning programme was being presented by Robert Rinder and Charlotte Hawkins for the second day in a row.
The segment started with Charlotte handing out bananas to her fellow co-host and guests saying she was "intrigued" to see how they peel the fruit. It comes after a TikTok creator from Australia, Tigga Maccormack, had gone viral for showing a better way to peel a banana, the Liverpool Echo reports.
In the video she showed how it was easier to peel away the banana skin from the bottom instead of from the stalk. The guests on GMB then tried to use the new way whilst debating which was the better way to peel the fruit.
TV personality and barrister Robert quipped: "See I thought I was doing the news here" after introducing a "banana expert", which turned out to be footage of a Barbary macaque at Trentham Monkey Forest eating a banana. It showed the monkey peeling it by the stalk and Charlotte said: "Quite clearly showing us, I think, that we were getting it right the whole way way along."
But the moment seemed to divide viewers, with some being left baffled over why the topic was being discussed. Duke of Preston said: "People starving but #GMB are having a debate on how to peel a banana properly." whilst Helen Taylor added: "#gmb Lets interrupt travel chaos discussion to discuss............how to peel a banana."
Christopher added: "Really? #gmb story about how to peel bananas, which is the same way monkeys do it. Slow news day, then." Gio Van said: "Just turned on @GMB and there is 5 people discussing the best way to peel a banana. Switched off and went back to bed. #GMB." Steve Haythorne added: "Now there’s a ‘banana expert’? Stop the world, I want to get off #GMB."
Others shared their opinions on how to peel the fruit, with one viewer Chan adding: "Thought everyone knew that peeling the banana from the bottom was the way to do it??? #gmb."
Rachel posted: "Charlotte Hawkins did not look happy eating that banana the wrong way #GMB." whilst Jon Jones tweeted: "To stop it going under your nails, gently squeeze the bottom end as this makes it split so it can easily be pulled apart."
Cathy Stagg said: "It's so nice to have a silly laughy content in the show (even if it is a ridiculous story) cos it's usually depressing stuff. The monkey is right, I always peel it at the end where the stalk is."
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV and ITV Hub from 6am.
