Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway supported by co-hosts as she issues Derek plea

Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway issued a plea to viewers on today's show

Thursday's edition of the ITV news programme was hosted by Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard. Kate appeared on the show alongside the anchors to read the latest headlines.

The broadcaster was congratulated by her co-hosts as she has been nominated for a National Television Award at tonight's ceremony. Kate is nominated in the authored documentary category for Caring for Derek, which was broadcast on ITV earlier this year.

The documentary provided an insight into Derek Draper's road to recovery after he returned home from hospital. The political lobbyist spent 374 days in hospital as he fell seriously ill after contracting coronavirus in March 2020.

Kate revealed in the documentary that Derek's brain and brain and body has been so impacted by covid that he needs support 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. The National Television Awards are decided by public vote and Kate explained why she hopes people will vote for the documentary.

She said: "I'd like people to vote for it because this one is very much about caring, the caring system, the plight of carers and the wonders of caring.

"It would be nice because that is the sort of group that often doesn't get recognised." Susanna said it was "always lovely to see Derek" as clips from the documentary were shown on Good Morning Britain.

She added: "As you say, Caring for Derek just illustrates the issues your facing as a representative of the broader picture of which it is just desperately hard."

Ben also sent his support as he wished Kate "good luck".
