Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway given devastating news while on air

Kate Garraway returned to Good Morning Britain after a lengthy absence today, on August 1.

Updating viewers and co-host Richard Madeley on Derek Draper's condition, she revealed her husband came down with "severe life threatening sepsis" after developing a bad kidney infection. The TV presenter shared that she was on air when she found out that he had taken a bad turn.

The 55-year-old was last seen on the ITV morning show on July 9, which was when she received a phone call from one of Derek's carers to say that they were really worried about him. He has been left battling long term health conditions after testing positive for coronavirus back in 2020.

Kate explained how she found out he needed urgent care, as she said: "I got a phone call from the person who was looking after him saying, 'Right, we're really worried'. I whizzed home and it just sort of went boom from there.

"We called an ambulance, went to A&E, where they said he had very severe sepsis, life-threatening sepsis. So it was really dramatic."

She went on to explain what the problem was, as she said: "His blood pressure was so low. A really junior doctor said 'What did you think it might be?' He knew it wasn't Covid-19 because we tested before we left the hospital on the Thursday.

"I said 'Well I did wonder if it was a urine infection, but weirdly we couldn't get anything for a sample.' And they just went, 'Kidneys'."

The GMB host added: "Unfortunately, his kidneys were really badly infected, blocked. The challenge now is to save them. So that's where we've been for the last three weeks."

Kate praised the hospital staff, who treated Derek while he was in ICU. He is now out of intensive care but is still in hospital recovering. She said: "One kidney is looking really good, just need to look at the other one. Still in high dependency."
