Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway delivers 'tough' update on husband Derek Draper after MBE joy

Kate Garraway has admitted that husband Derek Draper has had a 'tough' time of things over the last week, having shared her delight at him being able to be there as she received her MBE on Wednesday.

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate was recognised in the 2022 New Year Honours for her services to broadcasting, journalism, and charity and headed to Windsor Castle on Wednesday, accompanied by family and friends, to receive her honour from Prince William. Having seen him fight for his life three years ago, when he was gravely ill with Covid and then watched him battle with his health ever since, Kate said it meant the world to her that Derek could see her get her MBE, as she reflected on her special day on Thursday's GMB.

Speaking to ITV co-star Ben Shephard and viewers at home, Kate said: "It was lovely at the castle there were so many people who wanted to shake Derek's hand and say 'my father, my husband my brother ... what you've gone through has given us a lot of hope. Because they are dealing with things from Covid but also other things like cancer which are difficult. So I think he got a huge amount from it as well, which was very very lovely."

And it was then that Kate admitted that things have not been easy for Derek of late, when she added: "48 hours before he was in hospital - it has been a tough 10 days for him. He was determined to be there."

As the country went into the first lockdown in March 2020, Derek was hospitalised, having contracted by Covid and his condition took such a worrying turn for the worse, that he was put in a medically induced coma, with Kate and the couple's children unable to visit him due to restrictions. Derek was finally allowed to return home over a year later and, has been back in hospital on numerous occasions over the last two years.
