Good Morning Britain Martin Lewis says people could get DWP boost as temperatures plunge

Good Morning Britain's Martin Lewis said people could qualify for extra support as temperatures drop.

The finance guru fronted today's edition of the ITV news programme alongside Susanna Reid. The two were joined by Alex Beresford who issued a grim weather forecast as icy conditions sweep across the UK.

The bleak prediction prompted Martin to step in as he spotted the wintry weather could mean people qualify for DWP Cold Weather Payments. The support is available to people in areas where the Met Office has forecasted mean average temperatures to be be zero or below for seven consecutive days.

Martin said it was a "possibility" people could qualify for the £25 support due to the cold conditions. However, the prediction was a five day forecast and Susanna later clarified the DWP said it is too early to decide if the current weather will trigger the Cold Weather Payment criteria.

Martin said: "I was looking at those charts earlier and thought we could be getting close." However, Alex said he doesn't expect the criteria to be met as temperatures look set to increase next week.

He said: "We've got some predicted temperatures over the next five days but it has to be a forecast of seven days."

"Based on the temperatures you're seeing behind me. Daytime temperatures of 3, 4 degrees. and a nighttime low of minus 10, 11 would pull us into that area where some people would qualify for the Cold Weather Payments.

"However, as we get towards Monday and Tuesday next week it's gonna start to rise a little bit so we may then come out of that so I'm not sure people will qualify it. We will be watching carefully."
