Good Morning Britain: Martin Lewis issues warning ahead of first £66 energy bill discount

Martin Lewis has issued a warning ahead of the £66 payment being issued to Britons this month. As the cost of living skyrockets, millions of households will receive non-repayable discounts from the government this winter, with a £400 discount being paid to consumers over the course of six months.

The first payment of £66 will land in bank accounts this month, although some of those expecting to receive the payment have expressed their confusion over when the money will be deposited into their bank account. On Good Morning Britain this morning, October 3, Susanna Reid put financial queries from viewers to her fellow presenter Martin Lewis, who last week struggled to answer questions due to the severity of the cost of living crisis.

Susanna asked Martin: "Merv Honeywood on Twitter [asked], 'Any ideas on when in October the first £67 gets credited to electricity? I keep getting vague emails about October but nothing more specific.'"

Martin replied: "It's firm-by-firm. Some people will have it credited, some people will have their bills reduced.

"If you're on a non-smart prepayment meter, you will be sent a voucher by text or email or mail to your contacted details. Most important to understand... you should never give anyone your bank details, you do not have to claim these payments.

"Whatever system you're on, you do not have to claim. So if you're getting anything telling you, 'fill in your details here', it's very likely to be a scam."

The financial expert added: "Be very, very careful. But it's firm-by-firm, and they're paying, I think, pretty quickly because they've had time to get this together."

Households will see a discount of £66 applied to their energy bills in October and November, rising to £67 from December through to March 2023. The non-repayable discount will be sent out on a monthly basis, regardless of whether consumers pay monthly, quarterly, or have an associated payment card.
