Goncalo Ramos passes Newcastle audition as Magpies 'plot €30million bid'

Newcastle United have been linked with a €30million move for Benfica hotshot Goncalo Ramos. That's according to Portuguese Journalist Pedro Sepulveda who claims the Magpies are will submit a proposal for the Portuguese forward in the coming days.

He tweeted: "Newcastle interested in Gonçalo Ramos. The British will come forward with a proposal in the coming days. @SLBenfica can sell the Portuguese striker for a value above 30 million euros."

The news comes as a surprise with Benfica including a €120m (£100m) release clause after signing a new deal with the Eagles, to take his contract through to the summer of 2026. The 21-year-old is considered one of the hottest prospects in European football, and Newcastle have witnessed that first hand after Ramos scored against the Magpies in the Eusebio Cup last month.

Ramos made 46 appearances for then manager Nelson Verissimo last season, scoring eight goals and notching four assists, alongside former Newcastle target Darwin Nunez. Despite the reports linking Ramos with Newcastle, Benfica boss Roger Schmidt is not worried by the speculation.

"I am very happy to have him as a player and I think he is also happy at Benfica. He is an interesting player for other clubs, but Benfica has a lot of good players who are also interesting. At the moment he is here with us and it doesn't worry me”, he said at the press conference.

Newcastle are still looking to bolster their attacking options this summer, after two bids for James Maddison were knocked back last week. The interest in Ramos would suggest Eddie Howe liked what he saw at the Estadio da Luz last month, passing a potential audition.
