Golf star tried to spark LIV rumours with Twitter change but it didn’t go as planned

PGA Tour star Max Homa has admitted he tried to spark rumours that he was making a controversial move to LIV Golf by changing his Twitter bio. A number of the sport's biggest names have made the switch to LIV following its inception in June.

Homa however has remained loyal to the PGA Tour, and has no doubt become one of the most likeable characters in professional golf. Throughout 2022 there had been plenty of rumours surrounding players joining LIV - which have proven to be both right and wrong.

Despite his loyalties, Homa looked to get his name involved in the speculation however things did not go to plan for the the five-time PGA Tour winner.

Asked whether he had been offended by his name not being included in the LIV Golf rumours, Homa said jokingly ahead of this week's Hero World Challenge: "Yeah, yeah, huge insult.

"No, I guess it would have been cool to be a part of that so I could live the life of, you know, it felt like a reality TV series for a bit.”

Trying to forge his name into the conversation, the 32-year-old admitted he took inspiration from fellow American Brooks Koepka, who became one of the biggest names to make the LIV switch.

Homa went on: "Brooks [Koepka] changed his bio and everyone figured out he was going [to LIV]. I was like, oh, I'm going to get in on this and see if people catch on but didn't realise that my Twitter bio doesn't get a ton of traction."

Joking that he hoped the increased attention to his bio change would help him in the PGA Tour's Player Impact Programme, he added: "I would have liked to be caught in the rumour mill so I could have run with it for a little while.

"It would have been good for that [PGA Tour Player Impact Program] thing, but was not lucky enough to be caught up." The 35-year-old will be on the hunt to add a sixth PGA Tour title to his trophy cabinet in the Bahamas this weekend, as he kicks off his Hero World Challenge week alongside Tony Finau in this evening's opening round.
