Daniel Andrews is walking away to a life of golfing, reading and more family time.
The former Victorian premier's tenure as leader ended at 5pm on Wednesday after his shock resignation just 24 hours earlier.
Calling a halt to his political career, Mr Andrews said he was looking forward to taking some time off to be with his family, golf and read a few books before considering possible work in the private sector.
And as he took the first steps towards a new life, he welcomed the decision to install his former deputy, Jacinta Allan as his replacement.
"I couldn't be more happy that my colleagues have unanimously endorsed and chosen Jacinta Allan to be the 49th premier," he told reporters.
"She's always worked hard for the people of Victoria and she always will."
Mr Andrews became a divisive figure during his nine years as leader, garnering unwavering loyalty and admiration among some and derision from others.
Those who were not fans, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, planned to gather on state parliament's front steps on Wednesday evening to mark his departure.
