Golf course club house goes up in flames in early morning blaze

A derelict clubhouse at a disused golf course has been badly damaged in an early morning blaze. Firefighters were called to the old William Wroe golf club in Flixton, Trafford on Thursday morning (February 16).

Pictures from the scene show the old clubhouse well alight. The golf club closed down in 2017 after 44 years in operation.

At its height around 20 firefighters were tackling the blaze. Crews spent at least five hours at the scene.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Just after 5.30am this morning, four fire engines from Stretford, Eccles, Sale and Altrincham fire station along with the Command Support Unit from Atherton were called to reports of a building fire involving a derelict building on Shawe View, Flixton.

"Crews arrived quickly at scene. Firefighters are using four jets to extinguish the fire.

"Firefighters have been attendance for around five hours and are still at the scene."

Following its closure the course was earmarked for housing, but following an uproar those plans were scrapped and in 2020 it was officially designated as a village green.
