Golf club raises more than £14k in memory of tragic Lanarkshire teen

A golf club has raised an incredible £14,650 for kids' charity Children's Hospices Across Scotland in memory of a Lanarkshire teenager.

The annual event at Hamilton Golf Club pays tribute to tragic 13-year-old Paul Creaney, who was supported by the charity before he sadly passed away in 2013.

Paul, from Hamilton, was born in February 2000, and at six-weeks-old was diagnosed with alobar holoprosencephaly, meaning that the brain cannot control the functions of the body.

Paul's parents, Denise and Matt, were told that he would not survive past six months but after spending most of his first year in hospital, the youngster went on to grow into a happy, always smiling boy.

Despite numerous operations throughout his life, everyone knew Paul by his infectious smile.

Denise, Matt and his big sister Emma were regular visitors to children’s hospice, Rachel House, where they found they had a chance to relax, recharge their batteries and have fun with Paul.

Paul, however, unexpectedly passed away on May 2, 2013, and Rachel House were there to help the family get through the first tough weeks and were still there afterwards with their continued support.

Hamilton Golf Club has since shown their support for the cause and over the years have raised thousands of pounds for CHAS.

Club member, Stewart Henderson, organised this year's event, which returned after a two-year absence due to Covid.

His daughter, Lara, ran the Edinburgh marathon in May as part of the fundraising efforts.

And Paul's family were once again involved in giving back to CHAS who supported them at their time of need.

His sister Emma took on a 100km in a month challenge, meanwhile Denise took part in this year's kilt walk.

A spokesperson from Hamilton Golf Club told Lanarkshire Live it was thrilled with this year's fundraising efforts, adding: "We were delighted to see the return of the annual CHAS Charity Event this year organised by member Stewart Henderson.

"The event is held in memory of Paul Creaney who sadly passed away in 2013 aged 13.

"Although Covid put a halt to the event over the last two years, family and friends have rallied round to continue raising money.

"Stewart's daughter Lara ran the Edinburgh Marathon this year, Paul’s sister Emma completed a 100k in a month challenge and Paul’s mum completed the Kilt Walk.

"A fantastic effort from HGC and everyone involved in raising the grand total of £14,650."
