An average of 10.1 million viewers tuned into the 82nd Golden Globes across CBS and Paramount+, matching last year's broadcast audience, as reported by Dick Clark Productions. This year's ratings were provided by VideoAmp due to a contract dispute between Paramount Global, CBS' parent company, and Nielsen, the standard audience measurement service in the industry.
Despite the overall decline in traditional linear telecasts, maintaining the same viewership as the previous year was considered a success for the Nikki Glaser-hosted Golden Globes. In 2021, the show attracted 9.4 million viewers according to Nielsen. Before the pandemic, the Globes typically drew nearly 20 million viewers, with 18.4 million tuning in during 2020.
Recent years have been tumultuous for the Golden Globes, with controversies threatening the future of the awards. In response to reports of a lack of Black members within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the 2022 Globes were canceled after widespread boycotts. NBC, the former broadcaster, dropped the show in 2023.
Despite facing challenges, the 2024 Golden Globes saw a ratings rebound following a turbulent ceremony hosted by Jo Koy. CBS subsequently secured the broadcast rights for the next five years after Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions took over the awards and transformed them into a for-profit venture.
The latest Golden Globes ceremony, which coincided with NBC's airing of the Minnesota Vikings-Detroit Lions game, received positive reviews for host Nikki Glaser. Major awards of the night went to the Netflix musical “Emilia Perez” and the A24 postwar epic “The Brutalist.” On the television front, FX's “Shogun” and HBO Max's “Hacks” emerged as winners.
