The 81st Golden Globe Awards will be remembered as the only thing that Taylor Swift lost in her 'Eras Tour' period. The singer-songwriter was nominated in the new category Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. The award went to 'Barbie' to the shock of swifties around the world, but to the joy of film lovers who weren't too happy with a concert captured on film among the nominees.
The night started with a bang by giving the best secondary actor award to Robert Downey Junior for his role in "Oppenheimer." It was a predicted win, but it was a tough category, so anything could happen. However, the movie about the creator of the atomic bomb kept piling up awards, among them the Best Director award for Christopher Nolan and the Best Actor for Cilian Murphy. It was also awarded the Golden Globes for Best Movie.
Lily Gladstone made history. She was the first Native American woman ever nominated to the Golden Globes. She won in the category of Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama.
The TV series "Succesion," "The Bear," and "Beef" were also among the biggest winners of the night.
Unfortunately, the few Latino nominees left the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills empty-handed. Both Pedro Pascal and Selena Gomez lost. They seemed to enjoy the night among their peers, though, even though Pascal was nursing an injured arm.
Downey Jr. was the first announced award after Hollywood's biggest stars walked the red carpet at The . Before, stand-up comedian and actor Jo Koy, who hosts the show for the first time, gave a surprisingly raunchy monologue, even teasing Meryl Streep.
Then came many well-deserved recognitions and some snubs, but overall, the 2024 Golden Globes was a nice kick-off for awards season and an appreciated opportunity for Hollywood to get together after the scriptwriters and actors strike.
