The 2023 Golden Globe nominations have been announced with Martin McDonagh’s black comedy Banshees of Inisherin emerging as early frontrunner.
The 1923-set story of a friendship wrecked on a small Irish island has picked up eight nominations for next year’s Golden Globes, including nods for best picture in the musical or comedy genre, as well as for McDonagh’s directing and screenplay.
Following not far behind is innovative multi-universe epic Everything Everywhere All At Once with six nominations, while Babylon, which offers a Rabelaisian look at Hollywood’s silent era and Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical examination of his childhood, The Fabelmans, are neck and neck with five nominations each.
Meanwhile, there were noticable snubs with Will Smith shut out of the best actor category for his role in Emancipation after he assaulted Chris Rock at this year’s Oscars.
Amazon’s big budget Lord of the Rings series also failed to earn a single nod.
Comedian Mayan Lopez and his actress daughter Selenis Levya revealed the nominees on Monday.
Next year marks the Golden Globes’ 80th anniversary.
The Golden Globes award ceremony will screen live on January 10 following last year’s boycott of the ceremony by NBC.
The broadcast dropped its coverage of the 2022 edition following accusations against its organisers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), of “ethical lapses” and of failing to maintain a sufficiently diverse membership.
This resulted in a number of Hollywood stars and their publicists opting to boycott the 2022 awards, with the HFPA then taking the decision to announce its 2022 winners in a slimmed-down ceremony with no audience.
The HFPA has since taken several steps to reform itself: in July it was acquired by Eldridge Industries, with Eldridge’s Todd Boehly as interim CEO, and in September it announced it had appointed 103 non-member voters to increase the diversity of its voting pool, saying that its voters were now 52% female and 51.5% racially and ethnically diverse (of which 19.5% Latinx, 12% Asian, 10% Black and 10% Middle Eastern).
The HFPA’s president Helen Hoehne also said the the organisation had banned its members from accepting gifts from studios.
