Golden Globes 2023: Margot Robbie isn’t over her Chanel era yet

Although the Barbie premiere is still a month away, at last night’s Golden GlobesMargot Robbie looked like she stepped right off the buzzy upcoming film’s set.

Robbie, who was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy thanks to her role in Babylon, glided down the red carpet in a custom Chantilly lace and silk tulle Chanel dress.

The ensemble was inspired by the brand’s fall/winter 2022/23 haute couture collection where the gown was originally presented in black. Of course, as Robbie is the face of Barbiecore — last year’s viral trend that saw A-listers and influencers alike dressed top-to-toe in pink — she opted for an on-brand light pink iteration of the halter neck and chevron-patterned bodice frock instead.

She paired the dress with understated yet chic beauty, leaving her blond hair styled down and her makeup minimal — relying on a mauve-berry statement lip only.

“It was exciting working with Chanel to make this custom look,” Katie Young, Margot Robbie’s stylist, told Vogue. She also revealed that they started working on the dress last autumn. “We met in September in Paris while we were all at a photoshoot." Embellished with 30,000 embroidered details, including feathers, bugle beads and sequins, it reportedly took over 750 hours to make.

Her sartorial choice comes as a surprise. Many thought Robbie, who had been a brand ambassador for Chanel since 2018, had ended her contract with the brand after the star sported more vampy looks from Celine, Alaïa and Bottega during the Babylon press tour.

However it’s clear the ambassadorship continues, with Tuesday night’s look joining her slew of knockout Chanel looks from over the years — including a white gown with draped-off-the-shoulder embroidered detailing that she wore to the 2018 Academy Awards. As well as a silver bespoke Chanel mermaid gown to the 2021 Oscars. “It always feels like a special moment when I’m wearing Chanel,” she told Vogue at the time.

As Robbie is set for a big year, it looks like we can expect a few more fabulous Chanel moments. In the mean time, scroll the gallery below to see how the star’s style has changed throughout her illustrious career.
