Golden Globe Awards: Brutalist named Best Drama

The Brutalist takes Best Drama

'The Brutalist' won the coveted Best Motion Picture – Drama accolade at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday (05.01.25).

The post-war epic beat off competition from 'A Complete Unknown', 'Conclave', 'Dune: Part Two', 'Nickel Boys' and 'September 5' to take one of the night's biggest honours, with writer-and-director Brady Corbet - who had earlier won Best Director - Motion Picture - reflecting on how he had been warned the movie was "undistributable" as he urged studios to take a chance on filmmakers and their visions.

He told the audience at the Beverly Hilton Hotel: "I'm incredibly moved, I prepared one speech, not two. I have to thank everyone up here who over and over again bet on this film that kept falling apart. They stuck with it through thick and thin, I love you all, I'm very grateful.

"This is an extremely well-produced film so I'd like to thank my producers."

Brady then offered further thanks to others involved with the movie before making his defence of his art.

He said: "I just want to leave everyone with something to think about. Final cut tie break goes to the director. that's sort of a controversial statement but it shouldn't be.

"I was told this film was undistributable, I was told no one would come out and see it, it wouldn't work, and I don't resent that. But I want to use this opportunity to lift up filmmakers, not just fellow nominees but all the extraordinary directors in this room. Films don't exist without the filmmakers.

"Please let's support them, let's prop them up.

"No one was asking for a three and a half hour film about a mid-century designer on 70mm but it works, so please just think about it and have a great night."
