Discovery Channel's Gold Rush: White Water star "Dakota" Fred Hurt has died after a short battle with brain cancer, it has been announced.
A statement released on social media by the star's family reveal that he died on Tuesday, with cancer noted in the post. His death comes only four months after he was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer.
Taking to his Facebook page on Tuesday, the 80-year-old's family penned a statement which read: "Dakota Fred Hurt passed away this morning surrounded by family. He fought courageously in his battle against cancer."
They added: "Fred touched many lives and was loved and supported by many." They then asked fans to donate to a cause in Fred's honour, adding: "If you feel inclined to donate on Fred’s behalf, please consider donating to the Mike Rowe Works Foundation in Fred’s honor.
"Having worked in skilled labor for the majority of his career, Fred was passionate about teaching others these valuable skills. Please note that this is the only donation request from Fred’s family," they continued.
Fans were quick to flock to the comments section, with many keen to share their love and messages of condolence. One fan said: "RIP Fred! You’re an incredible example! I’m Thankful to have gotten to know and respect you throughout the Gold Rush series. Many Fans, I’m one too!"
While another added: "He left his mark on this world. Rest in peace Fred. Hope there's some streams of gold where you have gone."
And a third said: "His smile! That laugh! Fred was one of a kind and one of my favorites on Gold Rush. Loved seeing Fred and Dustin diving together on White Water. I wish this season had been the biggest gold haul ever. RIP Fred. Your smile and laughter and your wisdom and experience will be missed."
The beloved star was best known for starring in Gold Rush: White Water, which is a reality television series that airs on Discovery Channel. The show saw gold miner "Dakota" Fred Hurt and his son Dustin Hurt, seeking fortune in Haines Borough, Alaska.
It was earlier this year in March that the famous miner shared the sad news of his stage 4 brain cancer diagnosis.
In a press release that was shared at the time, the TV star said: "I’ve lived a full 80 years of an interesting life. If I emerge from this dark diagnosis, I’ll have another adventure to share with you folks."
