A police search has located two men lost while gold prospecting in remote north-west Tasmania.

Tasmania Police said the men contacted family members about 8:20pm on Thursday to advise they had become lost in the Mengha area.

Police said the men had advised they were "heading to the Spion Kop Road area to prospect".

Police resources, including the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, were involved in the search effort.

Just after 3pm on Friday, police advised the men had been found "safe and well".

"The two men who were believed to be missing have been located after an emergency text message application alerted police to their location when they entered a service area," Senior Sergeant Stewart Williams said.

"I encourage anyone entering Tasmania’s remote wilderness to have a registered EPIRB or PLB (personal locator beacon) device which can pinpoint your location or be familiar with using the Emergency Location Service application available on most mobile phones."
