Queensland Police have issued a warning about the dangers of swimming while intoxicated after a 23-year-old man drowned overnight in a Gold Coast lake after accepting a 'dare'.
Superintendent Geoff Sheldon said the man accepted a challenge from friends to swim in a lake at the Emerald Lakes Golf Club around 9:45pm.
"Mucking around with mates and he's gone under the surface and drowned."
Superintendent Sheldon said the man was seen "floundering" before he submerged.
Police said he was retrieved approximately 10 minutes later and efforts to revive him with CPR were unsuccessful.
Superintendent Sheldon said it was a "tragedy" and police were investigating whether alcohol played a role in the man's death.
He said it was a timely reminder of the dangers of alcohol and swimming with the Easter long weekend beginning on Friday.
Police believe the man was a Gold Coast resident.
In a statement, Emerald Lakes Golf Club said the management and staff were "extremely shocked and saddened by this tragedy".
"Counselling is being provided to the staff and we are co-operating fully with the police investigation," the spokesperson said.
"It is inappropriate to comment further at this stage."
