Gold Coast look to Campbell for NRL spark

In a bid to revive their ailing NRL season, Gold Coast are going back to Plan A with young gun Jayden Campbell set to regain the Titans' No.1 jersey.

Campbell hasn't played for the Titans since he suffered a rib injury in the round-three loss to Canberra, finding himself overlooked for the past fortnight despite recovering from that complaint.

In the six matches the 22-year-old has missed, the Titans have won one and lost five to slump to 14th on the ladder with their finals hopes already hanging by a thread.

Desperate to halt that slump and having promised to make changes after a 44-16 thumping by the Sydney Roosters in Mackay last weekend, Titans coach Justin Holbrook is returning to the young spine that started the season.

Campbell will return at fullback with Queensland State of Origin representative AJ Brimson to move to five-eighth and partner Toby Sexton in the halves once more.

Holbrook believes that still remains Gold Coast's best option as they prepare to face a resurgent St George Illawarra in Saturday's Magic Round clash at Suncorp Stadium.

"That's probably been when we've played our best footy, the first couple of rounds," Holbrook said.

"He's (Campbell) just got to come back in and do that again.

"Gives us our best chance this weekend ... it's good to know we'll get back to what we've practised all pre-season."

The Titans' spine changes come amid several others in their squad.

Corey Thompson and Greg Marzhew have both been dropped, with Phil Sami to return from a knee injury on one wing and Jamayne Isaako named on the other.

Esan Marsters will play centre in place of Patrick Herbert (calf), while Kevin Proctor is out with a shoulder injury.

It means Isaac Liu will move to the second row, with former State of Origin forward Jarrod Wallace earning a recall after impressive performances in the Queensland Cup for Burleigh Bears.

Having suffered five straight defeats, Holbrook is viewing last weekend's humiliation as a line in the sand.

"I thought the Roosters just had a lot more urgency than we did and that's unacceptable. We've got to fix that up this week and get that right," he said.

"We've got a big sort of six-week block now going into a bye. We've got to start to win games.

"That's easy to get up for knowing the position we're in."
