Gok Wan on marrying his own life at 50, Glastonbury sets and 'big Beyoncé moment'

When Gok Wan isn't teaching women how to look good naked or cooking up a banquet for his family and friends, you'll find him mixing tapes for a wild crowd at Glastonbury.

The multi-award-winning MBE has many strings to his bow, from working as a presenter to a stylist, and a chef to a DJ - but he always finds time to celebrate them all.

As he approaches the big 50 next year, Gok reflects back on his proudest life achievements, how he marked them, and the 'Beyoncé moment' that he's still yet to have.

Speaking to the Mirror ahead of his DJing performance today, Gok said: "I've got so many proud achievements and all of my biggest life moments are surrounded by food.

"If I've done a great show that I'm really proud of, or a big campaign, I'll always go out for a meal at the end of it or host my friends at home."

The 48-year-old, who has partnered with Philadelphia Intense, grew up surrounded by cooking and eating in his parents' restaurant, The Bamboo Tree.

"Food has always been a massive part of my life, growing up in catering with my mum and dad, and also being mixed heritage," he explained.

"It was a great way of my dad telling me about the country he came from and what they ate, and all of his stories have always been laced with food.

"Now, I love feeding people, prepping ingredients and creating recipes. I use food to celebrate and show my friends how much I care about them."

Though, mealtimes haven't always been a marker of celebration for Gok, having battled with his weight and an eating disorder in his teens.

"I learnt that food wasn't the enemy and I'm really happy and lucky to say that I fell in love with food again, by making cookbooks, feeding friends and working on campaigns like this," he said.

"I've been known to prep for three days before I have people over. That's how much it means to me. I'll be inspired by meals in places like Berlin or Ibiza and want to recreate them all.

"One of my closest friends, who is sadly dying of terminal cancer, comes to stay with me every six months, and the first thing we organise is what I'm going to cook.

"I really like looking after people, whether that's feeding them a meal or teaching them about fashion. I really care about the people around me."

This weekend, Gok will be celebrating his second year of performing at Glastonbury with the delicious street food trucks at Worthy Farm.

"Glastonbury is a massive milestone for me. This year is the first time I've ever really taken the summer off of filming. I'm dedicating it to music and DJing," he said.

"Not that I'm trying to transition away from TV or fashion, but I have found the courage to say, 'Actually, let's give this a go'. It's really exciting.

"I'm 50 next year and I have really started to look back at my life and what else I want to do. I'm so lucky that I've been given the opportunity to wear so many hats."

The dance music enthusiast, who will be playing a few tracks of his own as well as other popular remixes, dreams of having a hit single one day.

"I would love one day to have a hit track and play it at a music festival like Glastonbury. I look up to massive DJs like Fatboy Slim and Carl Cox," he said.

"It would be a real Beyoncé moment to play your own chart-topping track. I'd really like to experience that just to see what it feels like."

While Glastonbury is his biggest achievement of the year, turning 50 will be his proudest milestone of 2024 - and he's not planning to keep it on the down-low.

"I'm really proud of myself for getting to 50. Living is exhausting and it can be really difficult," Gok said.

"I've got here and I'm in good shape. I have wonderful friends and family, and a job that I absolutely adore. I'm the best person I can possibly be."

Of course, the celebrity chef will be marking the occasion with food, and he plans to have all of his loved ones round for a giant garden party.

"You know William and Kate's garden parties? That's what mine will look like. I have every intention of throwing everything at my 50th," Gok said.

"I'm not married and I've told myself, 'I'm going to marry my life at 50'. I'm going to marry my friends, family, job. I'm going to marry it all.

"I want everything that I've ever achieved and all of the amazing people that I've met there. That's not from a narcissistic point of view, it's not me marrying myself.

"I just really want to celebrate all of the great stuff in my life. I even want the friends that I've lost touch with or had a row with there as well, because they've all contributed something to my life."

And after that? Who knows. Gok would like to move house again one day and feels excited for what the future holds.

"London is my forever place but this isn't my forever home. I'm not afraid of moving, if anything I get jealous of where other people live," he said.

"50 is really significant. It's huge. But I'm not dreading it, if anything I feel like I'm only just getting started."

According to new research by Philadelphia, the average adult in the UK experiences 11 intense life moments a year and one in three Brits turn to food to celebrate them.

To promote the new Philadelphia Intense Garlic & Herbs and Philadelphia Intense Herbes de Provence, Gok is hosting a pop-up tour across the nation.

"I love hosting friends and family, especially for stand-out moments in life, so, getting involved with the Intense by Philadelphia pop-up tour is right up my street," Gok added.
