Gogglebox viewers call for 'out of touch' Mary Killen to be axed from Channel 4 show

Gogglebox viewers have called for Mary Killen and Giles Wood to be axed from the hit Channel 4 show over 'out of touch' comments in response to a Boris Johnson interview. In the most recent episode on Friday night, the cast shared their thoughts on an interview aired between Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid and the Prime Minister.

Some fans were shocked by Mary's reaction to what was said during the GMB interview, and have called for the broadcaster to drop the 'controversial' couple from the much-loved BAFTA-winning programme. Susanna had met with Mr Johnson in person at No 10 Downing Street for the interview, where they discussed everything from the ongoing war in Ukraine to the cost of living crisis.

A clip was then shown on Gogglebox, where the PM was informed about the story of pensioner Elsie. The 77-year-old had cut down her meals to one a day and spends the majority of her day on the bus to avoid using her heating and electricity at home, all due to the hike in energy bills, Express reports.

Gogglebox veteran Mary said in reply to the video: "I'm very sorry for Elsie, but Susanna is making out it is Boris's fault, and Boris doesn't care." Her husband Giles replied: "Whose fault is it?" to which Mary added: "The global situation."

Her response sparked a frenzy among fans of the show, of which many flocked to Twitter to share their thoughts. User @Ms_Me_12 said: "Watching #Gogglebox on catch up and I am shocked at Mary's excuses for our DISGUSTING POLITICIANS.

"That attitude is why we are where we are. If he was innocent, he would've held his hands up instead of going on TV to talk about it, before being caught out. #ComeOnNow." Another viewer, @overdressjen, added: "Oh no … I am going off Mary #Gogglebox ."

@Wandoful said: "Mary is so out of touch. If you can’t hold to account the Prime Minister of the country, what are we supposed to do? They’re the leaders of the country. They are supposed to support the average human in times of need.

@MackRanks wanted the pair gone and tweeted: "Mary and Giles....Get rid #Gogglebox," a statement @HellyB3 agreed with as she chimed in: "#Gogglebox get rid of Mary."

However some avid watchers of the show stuck up for the diversity of the cast. Twitter user @_MFrank96 said: "I agree with Twitter that Mary is out of touch and I certainly don’t agree with her. But the beauty of #Gogglebox is diversity and able to express opinion, even if it is different from your own. She and Giles can’t be axed because you disagree with them."

And Forza Stanley - @Accystan1962 - agreed, commenting: "The fact that people are getting so annoyed at the fact Giles and Mary have an opinion about something is mind boggling. Are we not allowed one now? Are we 'tory scum' if people don't have the same one? Just agree or disagree, don't get so offended, jesus!!!"
