Gogglebox star standing to be an MP as he announces surprise move into politics

Gogglebox star Josh Tapper is in the running to become an MP as he announces a surprise move into politics.

The TV star, 25, who joined his mum, dad and sister on the Channel 4 show until 2017, is standing to become the first Labour MP for Chipping Barnet.

Taking to Twitter, plugging his campaign, Josh said: "Some people may think I'm inexperienced, but I ask you to judge me on my record.

"From reversing Tory neglect on our green spaces to pioneering institutional change of mental health support.

"I've always shown that no matter how big the challenge, I'll always take it on and get the job done."

Josh captioned the video: "Politics is about people. Our community taught me to work hard, stand up for others, give back and fight for what you believe in. Theresa Villiers doesn't fight for the change we need. That's why I'm standing to be the first Labour MP for Chipping Barnet."

The impassioned plea went down well with fans with many telling the TV star they'd vote for him.

Josh was a campaign assistant for the Prime Minister's Office and Cabinet Office before working as assistant campaign manager.

He then bagged a new job as a communications officer for a cross-party think tank in 2019.

When the politician left Gogglebox in 2017, Channel 4 promised a door would always be open for him to return to the sofa along with the rest of his family.

They said: “Channel 4 will, of course, keep the door open for him but it’s a really exciting opportunity for him."

But speaking exclusively to the Mirror at the time, Josh said he had no interest in returning to the small screen.

“The option to go back is always there but I want to move away from that and the focus is now very much on my job,” he said.

“Of course, I miss it and the sitting on the couch watching TV. But I am more focused on my future....it’s a more a secure path.”

Josh's parents, chauffeur Jonathan and nursery teacher Nikki, and sister Amy continued on Gogglebox without him.

However, they left the show in 2018 after five years on the sofa with a source telling the Daily Star a year later: "The Tapper family was part of Gogglebox for five years and they loved it. But they don’t have any plans to return. They have moved on."
