Gogglebox was back on our screens this week, with the regular families sharing their opinions on the biggest TV shows of the last week. This week they were quick to take aim at The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe.
The show is a dramatisation of the true story of John and Anne Darwin. The couple were plagued by debt but instead of paying their bills or declaring bankruptcy, they chose instead to fake John's death in a canoe accident.
In real life, the couple was caught out in their insurance scam. Both spent time in jail for the crime.
The story captured the imagination of the nation, with John labelled "The Canoe Man" in the press. It led to a dramatisation of the incident on ITV called The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe.
But the Gogglebox regulars found humour in the show, even before it started. Particularly, Pete and Sophie in Blackpool.
Commenting on the show's intro, Sophie said: "The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe, what an odd name."
Pete quickly piped in with his opinion. "It sounds like a s*** porno," he said.
Sophie agreed. "It does. It does, yeah." Their opinion of the show did change once they watched the full episode. Gogglebox is airs at 9pm on Thursday on Channel 4.
