A recent episode of Channel 4’s Gogglebox has left loyal viewers reeling after witnessing a controversial scene that some described as “disturbing” and “pervy.” Fans threatened to “switch off” when the moment unfolded on screen, adding another headline-making incident to the program’s storied history of provoking strong reactions.
The incident occurred during a night of varied programming enjoyed by the Gogglebox families, who were tuning in to catch hits such as Gladiators, The Apprentice, Celebrity Bear Hunt, and The Fear Clinic: Face Your Phobia. However, it was the latest season of Sky’s The White Lotus that ultimately pushed the envelope, reported Lancs Live.
Premiering on February 17, the new installment of the series continues the tradition of edgy storytelling set against exotic backdrops. Previously set in Hawaii and Sicily, The White Lotus now finds its characters navigating the opulent yet unpredictable environment of a resort in picturesque Thailand.
This season introduces an intriguing mix of characters. Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins lead as an unconventional age-gap couple, Chelsea and Rick, while Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, and Michelle Monaghan play a close-knit trio on a girls’ getaway. Natasha Rothwell, a fan favorite from season one, makes a notable guest appearance.
Meanwhile, the family fronted by Jason Isaacs and Parker Posey—portraying Timothy and Victoria—has stirred significant conversation with its narrative focusing on their adult children, brought to life by Sarah Catherine Hook, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Sam Nivola.
Matters came to a head in a particularly contentious scene from the first episode, where brothers Saxon and Lochlan share a hotel room. In the scene, Saxon, portrayed by Schwarzenegger, casually asks about his younger brother’s porn preferences before retreating to the bathroom.
Although the camera spared viewers a full frontal display, the moment was unmistakably captured on Gogglebox. The reaction was immediate as families on-screen burst out with a collective “Oh!”—a response echoed by viewers Ellie and Izzy, Jenny and Lee, and the Michael family.
Adding to the on-screen banter, Giles, watching alongside his wife Mary, remarked: “So far, so pervy, Mary,” while Jake quipped to his twin Harry: “I have never done this by the way!” These candid comments encapsulated the mixture of shock and amusement among the audience, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.
Further fueling the debate, Pete Sandiford from Blackpool observed, “Something happens to people when they stop in hotels,” commenting on the peculiar behaviors often encountered during hotel stays. Online chatter soon followed, with one viewer posting: “Now we know what to do with the complimentary shortbread biscuits in hotels, thanks Pete and Sophie,” while another added, “Gogglebox so far so pervy lol he’s right there.”
Not all feedback was light-hearted; one viewer wrote, “#Gogglebox has just made me put a line through watching the white lotus. Too weird and disturbing. No thanks!” with another confessing, “Why does #Gogglebox always end with the weird stuff. Turned off for the last five minutes. White lotus is a no-go for me, sorry.”
