Gogglebox behind the scenes secrets including what stars get paid

Gogglebox has recently returned to our screens to entertain us with commentary on the latest TV.

The Channel 4 show has become a firm favourite with fans since it first started back in 2013, and it's now into its 20th series. But there's a lot viewers don't know about the show - from how much stars get paid, to how filming takes place, and how producers find new people to star on the show.

Here are some behind the scenes secrets and answers to the questions we all want to know.

How much do Gogglebox stars get paid?

Channel 4 has not released details for individual families, but it's reported they make more than £1,000 per month. Gogglebox stars can expect to be paid £1,500 a month between them, which they then split however they see fit.

Families are also said to be given a free takeaway of their choice to enjoy during filming.

Who decides what shows they watch each week?

Gogglebox stars watch a range of different shows each week - from light hearted reality TV to horror films, the news and hard hitting documentaries. According to the producers, they try to include a live show, a couple of news stories, an entertainment show and a documentary or two.

Producer Tania Alexander told Vice: "We film about five or six things a night, so something that’s an hour long will probably cut down to about 25 minutes."

When do they watch the shows and how long do they film for?

According to show insiders, during each season of filming the stars are expected to commit to 12 hours of filming a week, which they usually do across two six-hour shifts.

This means most of the cast film in between working full time or part-time jobs. Gogglebox creators start shooting on a Friday and film throughout the week. They spend the first four days assessing and cutting material, with a lot of what is recorded cut from the final product - reports Closer.

After working out which material they're going to use, the show's creators begin piecing the episode together just three days before the show airs, working through Tuesday afternoon, all day Wednesday, and throughout Wednesday night.

On Thursday afternoon, they finalise the episode and have Craig Cash do the voiceover and the episode is done.

Do they have cameramen in their house?

To make filming more authentic, production staff usually set up in another room in each house where they control the cameras from.

The show is filmed using two remote cameras, known as hot heads.

How did Gogglebox stars end up on the show and can you apply?

If you've ever fancied appearing on the show, it's useful to know that instead of auditions, new Gogglebox stars are discovered by scouts. There is no official application process as a specialist production team usually travel around the country looking for personalities who fit the bill.

Earlier this year, Channel 4 put out a casting call for new members from the North of England to join the programme. Producer, Erica Von Stein, specified several targeted locations at the time - including Liverpool - as she encouraged people to tag the "funniest people" they know.

Gogglebox creator Stephen Lambert said to the Radio Times: "Everybody on Gogglebox has been found and persuaded to be on the show and I think that's the key to why they are likeable and why the show works, because we get to know these people.

"We've never advertised for people on Gogglebox."

Gogglebox airs Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4 and All 4.
