Gogglebox and Love Island snubbed in Bafta TV Awards nominations

The Bafta TV Awards 2023 nominations were announced this week with Bristol's very own Stephen Merchant being honoured for his role in the Outlaws. Other successes include This Is Going To Hurt and The Responder with each series being put forward for six awards.

But plenty of beloved programmes have been missed out by BAFTA, including fan-favourites Gogglebox and Love Island.

The ITV dating series boasted some of the biggest audiences throughout 2022 and saw iconic lines from some of the cast spread exponentially across social media.

While Channel 4's Gogglebox, which has in previous ceremonies brought home the gong at the prestigious TV awards, was this year not entered into a single category. The much-love reality series is marking its 10 anniversary in 2023 and has aired a special show for the event.

Heading to the awards next month will be Bristol's Stephen Merchant for his performance in The Outlaws. The funny man produced and featured in the series, which was set in our city.

The crime-comedy-drama was enjoyed by millions, with viewers binge-watching both seasons. The BBC revealed that the first series of the show had been the broadcasters "biggest comedy launch of 2021" and had been streamed 11million times on their streaming site.

He faces competition from Daniel Radcliffe for his role in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story and also from Lenny Rush after he starred in Am I Being Unreasonable.

BBC was the clear leader ahead of the ceremony in April with a total of 81 nominations across both TV and craft categories, while Channel 4 was second with 33, Netflix has 24 and ITV 19.

This Is Going To Hurt author Adam Kay, said: “I’m thrilled for all the brilliant cast and crew and all at Sister and Terrible for their Bafta nominations for This Is Going To Hurt. I’m certain they would agree with me in saying that this show is a love letter to the NHS and the staff who work there."
